Tristan Ludlow is the main protagonist of Legends of the Fall. The favourite, wild and well-versed in Native American culture son of decorated ex-US Army officer Colonel William Ludlow and his wife Isabel, Tristan and his family moved to a remote part in Helena, Montana in the early 1900s with Cree family friend One Stab and hired hand Roscoe Decker and his family following the Colonel's disgust and outrage at the treacherous policy of the government towards the Native Americans; the more he grew up, the more Tristan faced with the drama and sour of life especially when he and his brother Alfred Ludlow meet with Susannah Fincannon, fiancée of their younger brother Samuel Ludlow, their brotherly bond being changed forever as they themselves are changed by nature, history, war and love.

After outliving his family (Besides his Children and Old Native Friend) he was eventually killed near the forest borderland of Montana after being attacked by a grizzly bear. Though he fought hard and long, he ultimately lost the battle. As the narrator states, "It was a good death".
